Traffic > Sources > Search > Organic.

Then above the visits graph you will see something like Goal Set 1 Ecommerce.

Click which one applies to you (not clear from your post which one) if you have ecommerce tracking setup click that or if you have setup a Goal for everytime someone lands on the confirmation page click Goal Set 1.

You can then sort the list via conversion rate etc to see which keywords resulted in sales.

It means that the user was logged into their Google account.

Google do not provide keyword data for their logged in users. It is a bit of a pain as that means about 40% of searches organically do not come with keyword data.

Cynically, i think it is another way that Google is trying to kill off SEO as a marketing tool (so that of course the only reliable way to market on the SERPs is via PPC)

As above - that can be anything like Gmail, YouTube etc means all searches are done via https and keyword data is not passed.

Bur it now also happens when users search via Firefox search box and Chromes omnibox as they are also secured by default.

You lose about 40-60% of keyword data.

The best way of regaining some of it is to go to Content > Landing Pages.

If you know which pages are getting most visits direct from search then you can get an idea of what keywords they are finding you by based on where you rank.

Sounds like we won't be able to get any data soon then, what would be the point of even using analytics, maybe that's their plan to close it down?

Depends on your perspective.

If you view the SEO industry as evil, then trying to destroy it is the work of the good.

The point of analytics isn't really to see where your traffic come from organically (you can get that from your server logs / webmaster tools), it is to understand when you get traffic, segmented by type of traffic, how they engage with your site, so using measurements you can gain insights so you can improve the sites performance in terms of its objectives (in your case mainly sales I presume)

Google are trying to control keywords, their latest trick is to pretty much ensure that no referrer data is passed when anyone is logged into or using ANY Google product. This is a massive issue at the moment because of course Google are acting illegally currerntly, both with their privacy policy and their actual physical privacy settings.

The EU have told google there must be a single soplitary 'log me out' button that logs users out of EVERYTHING! Google say this isn't possible due to multiple platforms etc, the EU are saying 'do it or leave Europe'

Microsoft Office released for Android phones, but not tablets

NEW YORK ? Microsoft is bringing a pared-down version of its Office software to Android phones, but it won?t work on Android tablets just as it doesn?t on iPads.

The software will be available starting Wednesday. It requires a US$100-a-year subscription to Office and won?t be sold separately.

The new offering follows the release of an iPhone version in June and brings an Office app to phones running the most widely used operating system on new smartphones.

Microsoft Corp. is trying to make its Office 365 subscription more compelling, without removing an advantage that tablet computers running Microsoft?s Windows system now have ? the ability to run popular Office programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

?The release of this app shows that we?re committed to keep providing additional value for Office 365 subscribers,? the company wrote in a blog post. ?Office 365 subscribers will now be able to access, view, and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents with Windows Phone, iPhone and Android phones.?

Microsoft is pushing subscriptions as a way to get customers to keep paying for a product that was historically sold in a single purchase. The company touts such benefits as the ability to run the package on multiple computers and get updates for free on a regular basis. However, a subscription can be more expensive than buying the package outright for just one or two computers.

Microsoft said it designed Office Mobile for Android phones specifically for small-screen devices, even though many people will prefer editing documents on a tablet?s larger screen. The company has a version for iPads and Android tablets, called Office Web Apps, but that runs on a Web browser and requires a constant online connection. The new Android software is an app that gets installed on the phone and can work offline.

With a subscription, customers typically get to use Office on up to 10 devices. Five of them can be Windows or Mac computers or Windows tablets. The other five can be iPhones or Android phones. Windows phones come with Office installed and do not count toward the limit.

In keeping the software off the iPad, the top-selling tablet computer, Forrester Research analyst J.P. Gownder has estimated that Microsoft is potentially ceding US$1.4 billion a year in revenue, based on 10% of the 140 million iPad owners paying for a US$100 subscription. Gownder said failure to provide it on the iPad or Android tablets gives incentives for users to explore competing offerings such as QuickOffice from Google and iWork from Apple.

Like the other mobile versions, the new Android software is designed for lightweight use. For example, you can use it to view and edit an attachment sent by email. But it?s not meant to create a complex spreadsheet from scratch.

The new software requires Android 4.0 or later ? the Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean flavours of Google?s operating system. It?s available through Google?s online Play store. At first, it?s available only in the U.S., though Microsoft plans to expand to 117 markets with versions in more than 30 languages.

Microsoft did not announce any plans for BlackBerry phones.

The new vacation budget-buster: taxes

Business

Image: Statue of Liberty

Mary Altaffer / AP

Leticia Baes, of the Phillipines, poses for a photo at the bases of the Statue of Liberty on July 4. Tourists spent $56.9 billion in New York, generating $10.9 billion in tax revenue for the state. That's $300 million more than Florida collected for its $71.5 billion in tourist spending.

Consumers may find it's getting tougher to stick to their travel budget.

It's not just pricey airfare, hotel rooms or car rentals, although those rates have been rising. The less-noticed budget buster: more taxes and fees levied on such purchases.

States, counties and cities continue to weigh taxes and surcharges aimed specifically at travelers:

  • Effective July 1, Northern Virginia's "transient occupancy tax" on hotels rose 3 percent, to 8 percent total.
  • Voters in Selma,Calif., will vote in November on whether to double the lodging tax there to 12 percent.
  • In Orange County, Fla., lawmakers have proposed adding a $2-per-day car-rental surcharge.

"The trend is for more and more local jurisdictions to impose these," said Carol Kokinis-Graves, a senior writer analyst with tax advisory firm CCH.

State budget woes often trickle down to the local level in the form of cuts to local government. Extra charges on hotel rooms and car rentals are one way to make up for lost revenue or fund planned projects, she said.

They can make a big difference. According to the U.S. Travel Association, in 2011 both North Dakota and South Dakota tallied $2.6 billion in tourist spending. But North Dakota generated $415 million in tax receipts from those transactions?$133 million more than South Dakota.

Big windfall for the Big Apple
Tourists spent $56.9 billion in New York, generating $10.9 billion in tax revenue for the state. That's $300 million more than Florida collected for its $71.5 billion in tourist spending.

It doesn't hurt that locals are unlikely to pay the extra taxes in question. "This is certainly an area [of legislation] generally accepted by voters and policymakers as easy to pass," said Joe Bates, vice president of research for the Global Business Travel Association.

The result can be a lengthy list of state, county and local taxes and fees that pop up on the final travel bill. According to a 2012 GBTA study, the cost to rent a car in Denver, for example, includes the state sales tax (2.9 percent), a regional transportation district tax (1 percent), a scientific and cultural facilities district tax (0.1 percent) and a special tax to finance construction of the Colorado Convention Center (7.25 percent), as well as a flat $2 daily fee to fund transportation projects. Collectively, they add $8.31 to the typical daily cost to rent a car.

'It leaves travelers with a bit of a bad taste in their mouth'
Fees tend to surprise travelers. "Most people don't even think about it until they leave," said Jason Clampet, co-founder of travel advice site Skift.com. "You check out of the hotel or you return your car, and then you look at the line item. It leaves travelers with a bit of a bad taste in their mouth."

Businesses tend to be more aware than consumers of the impact of taxes on their budget, said Bates. They usually consider such charges when deciding where to hold a large staff meeting or conference. Taxes on travelers to Chicago are 81 percent higher than those in Fort Lauderdale, he said.

That's less useful for consumers set on a particular destination, although it's still possible to book to limit some taxes and fees.

The easiest switch is comparing costs across car rental locations, said Clampet. Airport pickup often entails more fees, something easily assessed at booking. (But some cities tack on fees regardless. Boston levies a $10 surcharge on all car rentals.)

Lodging is tougher. Some states, like Connecticut, assess lodging taxes at the state level, and prohibit additional local taxes. Most, however, give counties and cities leeway to add their own charges?which can be tough to track.

"Local tax information is notoriously difficult to find and maintain," said Kokinis-Graves. "There are still some local jurisdictions that do not have an online presence." Even online travel booking sites often hedge their bets, providing estimates of tax owed, with the caveat that local taxes and fees may be added at the time of travel. Travelers' best bet may be to leave extra room in their budget for the unexpected.

Energy-efficiency is reaching new heights in North Dakota

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Energy-efficiency is reaching new heights in North Dakota.

Habitat for Humanity is building the state's first single-family LEED certified home.

Volunteers are hammering away at a first for North Dakota homebuilding.

This foundation will soon be the first LEED-certified single family home in the state.

LEED stands for Leadership Energy Efficiency.

Jenn Whitney- US Green Building Council ND: "Habitat homes are for people who can't afford a home. So, why not make it as energy-efficient as possible?"

That's good news for the future owners of this home, the Salinas family.

With six children, saving money is always a plus.

Carlos Salinas- Future Habitat Home Owner: "I think it's a great opportunity for us to save some money on our energy bills."

Many things go into a LEED home, everything from highly efficient insulation and plumbing, to having community resources like bus stops and grocery stores within walking distance.

In October, the Salinas will move out of their rental four-plex and into a secure place to call home.

Angela Salinas- Future Habitat Home Owner: "We've been trying for a long time, but have been denied by the banks. We just can't wait to move in and start our dream."

The house won't technically be certified until after it is complete.

Fox Sports Live talent announced

Written by Joe Lucia on .

The on-air talent for Fox Sports Live has been announced, and many of the names are ones we're familiar with: Jay Onrait, Dan O'Toole, Charissa Thompson, Andy Roddick, Gary Payton, Donovan McNabb, and Ephraim Salaam.

The show, which will serve as Fox Sports 1's flagship program, will be anchored by Onrait and O'Toole, formerly of TSN. We've known that they'd be the main anchors for the program for awhile, so all today did was really confirm their role with the network. The anchors will receive breaking news and updates from Don Bell and Ryan Field, while Julie Stewart-Binks and Molly McGrath will also serve as correspondents.

The next name in the pecking order is former SportsNation host Thompson, who will be the primary host of Fox Sports Live's opinion and analysis segments. I'm sure we're all cringing at the prospect of "opinion" segments, but as long as there aren't contrived debate segments, we should be OK (hopefully). Roddick's hiring was announced in May, and he's one of four former athletes on the show's panel. Payton's TV experience is limited, but he has hosted a weekly Bay Area radio show and a weekly TSN show in Canada.

McNabb joins Fox Sports Live after a brief stint with NFL Network, and he had some moments on television and on Twitter that made us wince. It'll be interesting to see what happens with his show on NBC Sports Radio, which isn't even four months old yet. Finally, there's Salaam, whose only media experience I can really find is a recurring role on Robert Mays' Grantland podcast.

On one hand, it's nice to see Fox going with a whole batch of new faces on their opinion panel to at least give us a bit of a fresh perspective as opposed to the usual overplayed opinions from the same faces you've seen time and time again. You can't build up new stars without giving new faces a chance. On the other hand, there's a pretty big opportunity for things to fall apart if the new names negatively impair the solid backbone of the show provided by Onrait, O'Toole, and Thompson. But remember, even the best athletes turned analysts were once in the same position. For every Jerry Rice that fades away quickly, there's a Jay Bilas who becomes a superstar in the broadcasting world

PRESIDENTIAL PAL Bush Shaves Head to Support Boy With Cancer

Former President George H.W. Bush has shaved his head to show support for the two-year-old son of a member of his Secret Service detail who is battling leukemia.

A statement from his office Wednesday, accompanied by a picture of a grinning, very bald Bush, said the 89-year-old former commander-in-chief had gone under the razor along with other members of his detail to show solidarity with young Patrick.

Bush and his wife Barbara lost their third child and first daughter, Robin, to leukemia almost 60 years ago when she was four.

The statement also said the Bushes had made a donation to www.patrickspals.org, a fund set up for the family, whose last name was not disclosed, by other members of the Secret Service detail.

The members of Bush?s security detail have also organized the Inaugural Patrick's Pals Motorcycle Benefit Run on August 10th in Maine. The Bushes are currently staying at their summer home in Kennebunkport.

The event will consist of a 50-mile motorcycle ride through the countryside followed by a lunch and silent auction to raise funds for Patrick's treatments.

Big News: Microsoft Reverses its Indie Policy: All ... - Games Thirst

Update: Not at launch. The ?every Xbox One is a dev kit feature will be added later, Microsoft clarified.

Original Story: Say what you will, but Microsoft has been listening to the gaming community, and after reversing course on used games, always online, region-lock and headsets, Microsoft has just confirmed another reversal: a major self-publishing push where any Xbox One console can be debugged to be used as a developer kit.

Here?s?Xbox?s corporate vice president Marc Whitten responding to a Kotaku inquiry about a self-publishing rumor that popped up on GameInformer earlier today:

Our vision is that every person can be a creator. That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox LIVE. We?ll have more details on the program and the timeline at GamesCom in August.

Clearly, Microsoft has been paying attention, and we?ll just thank Sony again, as they were and still are the ones trumpeting the independent development scene, even going as far as featuring about 8 indie devs on their E3 stage.

Sony was also to thank for Microsoft?s DRM reversal when it became apparent to Microsoft that Sony had clearly adopted an approach that allows gamers to do whatever they will with their used games, and steered clear from forcing gamers to always require an internet connection when playing games on PS4. Microsoft had the opposing policies in place, and quickly banished them after it looked like Sony was getting all the good press and preorders.

Again, when it was revealed that your PS3 headets would work just fine on PS4, Microsoft had to change its policy there, too, and announced that they were working on an adopter that would allow Xbox 360 owners to use their old headsets on Xbox One, although you?d have to pay for the adapter.

But still, this is another good move by Microsoft, and I?m looking forward to hearing more about the program come GamesCom.

Home-schooling saga is the other asylum case making headlines

While much of the world is following Edwin Snowden?s asylum case in Russia, another asylum case in Tennessee involving a home-schooling family is getting a lot of attention, too.

Courtroom_United_States_CourthouseSnowden, the former NSA government contractor, is trying to avoid deportation to the United States, claiming he faces persecution after revealing extensive information about the government?s surveillance programs.

The Romeike family is seeking a court ruling on its asylum request to stay in the United States, saying it faces persecution back in Germany because that nation has outlawed home schooling and it punishes offenders with fines and the possible loss of custody of home-schooled children.

The court battle in the U.S. between the Romeikes, their attorneys and the federal government has been going on for several years. This week, the family?s defense team said it would appeal its case to the Supreme Court if other options were exhausted.

?This is not over yet,? said Michael Farris, founder and chairman of the Home School Legal Defense Association, which is working with the Romeike family. ?We are taking this case to the Supreme Court because we firmly believe that this family deserves the freedom that this country was founded on.?

The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals recently refused to re-hear the case with a full panel of judges. In May 2013, a three-judge panel ruled against the Romeikes.

Judge Jeffrey S. Sutton, writing for the appeals court, in May, explained that the Romeikes would have American legal precedent on their side if it had been prosecuted by authorities in the United States for not sending their children to public or government-approved private schools here.

Sutton cited Wisconsin v. Yoder, a 1972 Supreme Court case where the Court said that individual?s free exercise of religion under the First Amendment outweighed the state?s interests in compelling school attendance beyond the eighth grade. (The case involved members of the Amish and Mennonite faiths who were prosecuted for refusing to send children to public schools, citing the act as a violation of faith.)

?Had the Romeikes lived in America at the time, they would have had a lot of legal authority to work with in countering the prosecution,? said Sutton.

Instead, the Romeikes, who are devout Christians, ?were living in Germany when the family was prosecuted and fined for home schooling their children in violation of German law.

Uwe and Hannelore Romeike, the parents, didn?t approve of some of the subject matter taught at German schools.

?I don?t expect the school to teach about the Bible,? Uwe Romeike said? in 2010, but ?part of education should be character-building.?

The family traveled to the United States in 2008 and sought asylum in Tennessee. It was granted asylum by a Memphis immigration judge in 2010.

Judge Lawrence O. Burman called the German home-schooling policy ?utterly repellent to everything we believe as Americans? when he granted political asylum to the Romeikes, on the basis that they were ?members of a particular social group? that faced prosecution in Germany because of their religious beliefs.

The federal government immediately appealed the decision, and the Board of Immigration Appeals overturned the decision in 2012.

?Having not shown any pretext in the enforcement of the compulsory school attendance law against them, the applicants did not establish a well-founded fear of persecution or the higher threshold of a clear probability of persecution,? the board said, as it ordered the Romeikes returned to Germany.

In May, Judge Sutton said that the appeals court agreed with the Board of Immigration Appeals.

?The relevant legislation applies only to those who have a ?well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion,? ? he said. ?There is a difference between the persecution of a discrete group and the prosecution of those who violate a generally applicable law.?

?As the Board of Immigration Appeals permissibly found, the German authorities have not singled out the Romeikes in particular or home schoolers in general for persecution. As a result, we must deny the Romeikes? petition for review and, with it, their applications for asylum,? he said.

Sutton said that the case centered around ?whether the Romeikes have established the prerequisites of an asylum claim?a well-founded fear of persecution on account of a protected ground. ? The Romeikes have not met this burden.?

Farris, from the Home School Legal Defense Association, outlined the case he hopes to present as the Romeikes continue their fight, in a statement issued last week.

?Despite Friday?s order, the Sixth Circuit?s opinion contains two clear errors: First, they wholly ignored Germany?s proclamation that a central reason for banning homeschooling is to suppress religious minorities. Second, the Sixth Circuit erred when it failed to address the claim that parental rights are so fundamental that no government can deny parents the right to choose an alternative to the public schools,? he said.

The Romeike case has also been followed by a wide variety of web sites and blogs since 2010, most of which support the Romeikes. And several members of Congress have also taken up their cause.

Scott Bomboy is the editor-in-chief of the National Constitution Center.

Obama Makes His Pitch for the Middle Class

This afternoon, President Obama is giving a speech on the economy from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois ??a speech that administration officials have been promoting heavily over the past few days.

Politico describes what to expect.

Administration officials and Democrats close to the White House say they hope the speech will achieve three goals: reset the political conversation on a still-recovering economy, warn Republicans not to create a fresh crisis in the fall and help cement the president?s legacy as economic steward through turbulent and hyperpartisan times.

According to a copy of the speech released to reporters under embargo, Obama will delineate the cornerstones of a strong and growing middle class. Those cornerstones also appear at a new website launched today by the administration, titled, "A Better Bargain for the Middle Class."

At Slate, Matt Yglesias explains what's really going on. When the president first began running for office, he outlined an economic plan. When the economy tanked in 2008, that was put on hold. Today's speech, Yglesias argues, is an attempt to "elevate the dialogue and talk about that longer-term agenda." As our Elle Reeve pointed out on Monday, the power of a speech isn't much when compared to a hostile House majority.

An interesting side note. Time explains why Obama chose Knox College for his address.

Knox has a special place in the President?s heart and in American history. ?It?s the place where I gave my first big speech after I had been elected to the U.S. Senate,? Obama said at a recent event in Washington. Wednesday marks his third visit?once as a Senate candidate, once as a Senator and now as commander-in-chief?adding to a long history of presidents and political figures who have left a mark on the college.

Google to Unveil Second-Generation Nexus 7 Today

In just a few short hours, Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) is expected to unveil the second-generation Nexus 7.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the company will sell the tablet directly to consumers through Google Play, just as it did with the previous iteration.

Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) and other retailers are expected to carry the device as well, though they may not begin to sell it as quickly as Google's own online store.

Related: Nexus 7 Could Sell 8 Million Units and Top the Kindle Fire 3

In an earlier report, The Verge estimated that Nexus 7 will ship with support for Bluetooth SMART, a newer Bluetooth format that consumes less energy.

While the device is still forthcoming, DigiTimes reported that touch panel makers are seeing steady orders for the next-generation Nexus 7.

In April, rumors about the Nexus 7's price began to circulate. One report claimed that the new seven-inch device could sell for as little as $149. This was no doubt in response to the low-cost tablets released by Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) and other firms.

Two months later the rumor shifted to a much higher price. Instead of retailing for less than $200, Google was believed to be considering a $229 price tag in order to help the device stand out from the crowd. By charging $30 more than the original Nexus 7, Google could increase its revenue while maintaining a much lower price that Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPad Mini, which starts at $329.

Another rumor stated that Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM), which is expected to provide chips for Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) second-generation Surface, will acquire the contract for future Nexus 7 orders. If true, Qualcomm would replace NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA), which manufactured chips for the first Nexus 7.

Early Wednesday morning, The Verge published a collection of second-generation Nexus 7 images that reportedly came from Best Buy:

Investors can tune in to YouTube to watch Google unveil the new Nexus 7 (and other possible products, as well as Android 4.3) starting at 9:00 a.m. PDT / 12:00 p.m. EDT.

5 Things Every Undergraduate Should Know about Employment ...

Unemployment remains a huge problem in Nigeria. Every year Nigerian universities continue to churn out thousands of new graduates with freshly minted diplomas who join a competitive job market with bleak employment prospects. If you are among the 25 percent of unemployed Nigerians or perhaps one of the approximately 45 percent of working age Nigerians who have given up hopes of finding a job in a job market that seems to be tilted in favor of the connected and returnees with shiny diplomas, questionable accents, and exotic work experiences from abroad, here are five things you should know:

Think Global
Now is not the time to begrudge the rich and fortunate who can afford to travel abroad for work and educational purposes. Just because you come from a poor or middle class socioeconomic background does not preclude you from opportunities abroad. In today?s hyper connected global landscape, what you know is more important than where you come from or your socioeconomic background. Take advantage of globalization and develop a global mindset.

A global mindset in the employment context is about developing your skills and applying them wherever they are needed around the world. For example, are you an unemployed Political Science and policy graduate who grew up in the North and who have mastered the cultural factors and dynamics that influence behavior and day to day living in the North? While a bank or oil company in Victoria Island may not necessarily value this in you, your perspective may be invaluable to an International Development agency somewhere around the world that is focused on resolving the conflict in Northern Nigeria and other African countries undergoing similar challenges as the North.

Similarly, are you fluent in Arabic? As a bilingual Nigerian, your English and Arabic skills maybe highly appreciated by a U.S. contractor in the United States or the Middle East. There are many instances where the skills we take for granted in Nigeria are actually appreciated around the world. Rather than sinking deeper into the pool of unemployment in Nigeria, broaden your horizons by thinking about how your skills may be applied beyond the shores of Nigeria. Think about teaching English in countries with emerging economies, such as Brazil and China. Most of these English teaching jobs will usually have a preference for people from the United States, the UK, Canada, and Australia; however once you can demonstrate that you know English just as well, you also have a fair shot at these jobs. Apply for fellowships and programs such as the Atlas Corps, which provides work opportunities in the United States to individuals from around the world. Take advantage of the aging populations in many countries and apply for skilled jobs in these countries. Some countries with aging populations are seeking qualified people to join their workforce and pay taxes.

Update Your Skills and Competencies
Just because you are unemployed is not a reason to set your alarm clock to 10:00am every morning. You have to do what you can to improve your chances of landing your next employment opportunity. And updating your skills set does just that. If there is any benefit to being unemployed, it is the time it allows you to do things you may otherwise not have time to do when you have a job. Now is the time to get that professional certification you have been putting off, return to school for a graduate degree or certificate program, and learn skills that will distinguish you from other job applicants.

Learn to Tell Your Story
An engaging C.V or resume and clear cover letter is the key.A common mistake most job applicants make is to underestimate the power of a good CV and cover letter. Your CV and cover letter is your ticket to landing an interview and a potential job. It also represents your brand. The secret to writing a powerful CV and cover letter that would make recruiters remember you, even after reading hundreds of other CVs and cover letters, is to think about your brand and the value it represents. Don?t just list all your past places of employment and job description or few assignments and chores you did there. Instead, write about how whatever you did added value to the organization. Remember that you don?t need to have had the fanciest title or position. It all depends on how you sell it on your CV and cover letter. When writing your CV and cover letter, establish a clear link between whatever you did and the bottom line of the business. Show your impact.

Consider an example of a secretary whose only responsibility was to pick up coffee for a physician in private practice. Although her tasks may seem menial, such a secretary can show her value on her CV by explaining how the coffee she sourced enabled the physician to stay alert and perform more than two surgeries a day. And by performing more than two surgeries a day the organization brought in X amount of money. She can also explain that by bringing in coffee every day, she enabled the physician to concentrate fully on patients, provide the best patient care, and increase patients? satisfaction. In this example, the secretary has shown how her role contributed to the bottom line.

Think Outside the 9-to-5 Box
Don?t be ashamed of unprofessional jobs. At one point or another, we have all been guilty of tying our self-esteem to our jobs. And so when we suddenly find ourselves unemployed without a traditional 9-to-5 professional job, our self-esteem plunges, and then we vigorously look for another 9-to-5 job. Our society has typically regarded bankers, doctors, lawyers, telecommunication workers, and oil company employees with a lot more respect than individuals in other professions. But here?s the deal: there is a lot of value and learning opportunities that can be gleaned from nonprofessional jobs that can help you get your next professional job. The financial rewards and respect may be minimal, but your professional growth would be enormous. For instance, by selling goods as little as recharge cards and even pure water, a person can learn highly valuable and sought-after skills such as customer service, interpersonal skills, and supply-chain management. Moreover, the experience provides good information and answers for behavioral interviews in which recruiters ask for specific life examples or situations of when you exhibited certain skills and capabilities. Again, it all depends on how well you are able to articulate these skills on your CV. and cover letter, and how you can translate the lessons learned from a nonprofessional job into a professional situation.

Volunteer and Make a Difference in Your Community
Volunteering helps to keep the mind engaged and it can be a potential differentiator between job candidates. When a recruiter is presented with two identical job candidates, the person who has volunteered and made a difference would be preferred over the person who remained idle and done nothing since being unemployed. Volunteering can also help you shake off the self-pity, shame, and laziness that unemployment sometimes forces upon people. Rather than eating Nkwobi, drinking stout, and complaining to friends about how hard it is to find a job in Nigeria, get up and start making a difference in your community. Something as little as cleaning your street can snowball into a nonprofit or nongovernmental organization. Don?t underestimate what you can achieve simply by getting started.

So there you have it. These five tips should get you moving towards your next opportunity.
