Houston recalled as happy in days before death (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Whitney Houston's last days were spent surrounded by family, catching up with old friends and doing a bit of what she was best known for: singing.

Her death Saturday afternoon in a Beverly Hills hotel room came hours before she was scheduled to appear at an annual pre-Grammy party that introduced her to the industry decades ago and was expected to honor the six-time Grammy winner.

The 48-year-old singer had been making the rounds in the days before the event, appearing at rehearsals and offering advice to singers Monica and Brandy. On Thursday, she appeared with fellow singer Kelly Price on stage at a Hollywood club, where she sang the hymn "Yes, Jesus Loves Me" to loud cheers.

With Houston's daughter Bobbi in the audience, the women shared a long hug and talked about their lives and families throughout the night, Price recalled Saturday. Houston spent hours standing on the side of the stage at the event honoring R&B music then joined partygoers on the dance floor, she said. "Whitney on Thursday night was one of the girls."

"She was happy," Price said. "She was the Whitney I always knew."

Soul singer Kenny Lattimore, who co-hosted the R&B event, said Houston seemed to be having a good time, making her sudden death "such a shock for me." He said Houston didn't appear to be having any issues.

Houston struggled for years with addiction to cocaine, marijuana and pills and the years of hard-living took a toll on her once-pristine voice. During rehearsal for a pre-Grammy event Thursday, Houston appeared disheveled, sweated profusely and her breath smelled of liquor and cigarettes, said a source who was present but not authorized to speak publicly.

Despite more than a decade of problems, including her divorce from Bobby Brown and numerous instances of erratic behavior, Houston was working toward a potential comeback. She had just completed work on a remake of the film "Sparkle," a project she'd worked to develop for years.

Yet some speculated that she was under the influence after the Thursday club appearance, when paparazzi snapped photos of Houston leaving and looking disheveled. Price called the rumors "totally untrue."

There was a family feel to the gathering, she said: "Our kids were there."

Price said she and Houston were planning another reunion, and that she was set to appear at the pre-Grammy gala thrown by her longtime mentor, Clive Davis, on Saturday night. Davis had expected that Houston would sing at the party, which went on as planned, he explained, because the diva would have wanted it that way. It took place in another part of the hotel from where her body was being examined by coroner's officials.

"I am personally devastated by the loss of someone who has meant so much to me," Davis said. "She was full of life, looking forward for tonight. She loved music and she loved this night that celebrated music."

Officials have released few details about how Houston was found or what killed her. A member of her entourage found the singer and alerted hotel security and paramedics already on site for Davis' gala. They failed to revive the singer.

In the hours after Houston's death, fans chose to remember the singer in better times, when her soaring voice introduced a new generation to the Dolly Parton song "I Will Love You" and propelled the film "The Bodyguard" into blockbuster status.

Her songs and albums quickly became top-sellers on iTunes, and fans and celebrities alike shared remembrances and accounts of impromptu memorials on the social networking site Twitter. Her death on the eve of the Grammy awards has already prompted changes to the broadcast Sunday, with Jennifer Hudson scheduled to perform a tribute during the show.

Price said her friend would want to be remembered as God-fearing and a good mother, rather than simply a singer. She said she and Houston often discussed parenting and issues unrelated to their musical careers.

She recalled her last night with Houston, the words they shared before Houston delivered what would be her final performance.

"I never ever imagined I'd be talking about her because she's not here," Price said.

Berli Jucker (BJC) yesterday opened Vietnam's most advanced glass-container plant and is looking to expand its trading and manufacturing businesses, including the setting up of a glass factory in Burma to cash in on the opening of the country and the growth potential of its beverage market.

"The expansion of our glass factory to Vietnam is in line with our policy to strengthen the business amid the open market environment when the Asean Economic Community is fully effective in 2015," said Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, chairman of BJC, a subsidiary of Thai Beverage.

The plant, constructed in partnership with Owens-Illinois and Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage, is about 60 kilometres southeast of Ho Chi Minh City in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.

Charoen said BJC's regional expansion would be based on its strong roots in Thailand for nearly 130 years in many businesses, including health, medical and daily products.

"We are looking for opportunities in potential markets such as Burma and Indonesia. We appointed sales agents in Burma a long time ago but because of local political problems and a closed market environment, our agents could do nothing more than just take orders and deliver products to their customers.

"However, with today's opening market environment encouraged by its government, we will be more proactive in penetrating the Burmese market, as the country is growing quite strongly and local consumers need to consume more modern goods," he said.

BJC has had a close relationship with Owens-Illinois for more than 60 years, beginning with Thai Glass Industries in Thailand and now extending to Indochina and Malaysia.

The US$47-million (Bt1.5 billion) Vietnamese factory will initially produce about 75,000 tonnes annually of mainly returnable premium glass containers for Vietnam's beer, soft-drink, food, wine, spirits and pharmaceutical markets. The plant can adapt to market trends, extending to four lines with production capacity of 84,000 tonnes of glass annually.

Underlying the plant's capability and flexibility are one furnace, three glass-making lines and two printing lines for applied ceramic labels.

The plant employs nearly 450 people, mainly from the Ba Ria region, and uses natural gas for improved sustainability. The new plant, completed in November, replaces the old facility in District 4 of Ho Chi Minh City that was recently vacated to facilitate urban-development plans.

Al Stroucken, chairman and chief executive officer of Owens-Illinois, said O-I BJC had become Vietnam's leading glass-container manufacturer, supplying most of the country's local and global food and beverage companies.

"Vietnam is experiencing strong economic growth, which clearly provides opportunity for the glass industry. We know that beer is packaged primarily in glass here, and we know that consumers are looking for quality, taste and purity of contents. Our high quality and versatile glass containers are the perfect packaging solution," he said.

"Glass is the most economical and sustainable packaging available, especially when using returnable containers, so it is vital that we have operations in place as the markets in this region grow and mature," Stroucken said.

"This new plant allows us to meet and exceed the high expectations of current and future customers in this region."

Aswin Techajaroenvikul, president of BJC, said his company was focusing on Southeast Asia, particularly Indochina and Malaysia.

"The opening of our latest facility will further strengthen our foothold in Vietnam, where we have established trading and manufacturing operations in industrial and consumer products.

"Together with our TGI glass plants, the joint venture will make BJC and O-I BJC the largest producer of glass containers in Southeast Asia. It also is another major milestone in expanding BJC's operations in the region," he said.

BJC two years ago acquired 75 per cent of Thai Corp International, a local trading company in Vietnam. BJC will use the company's logistics network to distribute its products in Vietnam.

BJC, via its local 50-per-cent-owned subsidiary Thai Beverage Can (TBC), has also joined with Ball Corporation, the world's largest producer of aluminium cans, to set up a $60-million plant called TBC-Ball Beverage Can Vietnam. The facility will start commercial operations in May with production capacity of 850 million cans per year.

But that wasn't the case for Nancy Rajala, who was sent home last week from "The Biggest Loser," after "G-Ma," as she was called, tried to defend Adrian's behavior. She'd lost 21 lbs. on the ranch, starting out at 217 -- but when she sat down with TODAY's Natalie Morales, Al Roker and Savannah Guthrie Tuesday she revealed she's now down by 45 lbs.

The show, she says, is about "ordinary people with ordinary lives trying to do the extraordinary, which is take time for yourself."

These days, as clips show, Rajala is making that time -- going sledding, swimming and just generally being more active. Finding that time for herself so she could take care of her body was key, she said.

"If you love yourself, you're going to give yourself time," she said. "I'm used to not giving myself a lot of time; I'm loving everybody else but not having the time for myself. But now I'm spending a lot more time for me."

Ferry sinks off Papua New Guinea with 350 aboard

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (AP) ? Rescuers have plucked more than 200 survivors from the sea off Papua New Guinea's east coast after a ferry sank Thursday with as many as 350 people on board, officials said.

An airplane from Australia, three helicopters and eight ships were scouring the search area after the MV Rabaul Queen went down while traveling from Kimbe on the island of New Britain to coastal town of Lae on the main island, Australian Maritime Safety Authority said in a statement.

The ferry sank 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Lae and 10 miles (16 kilometers) from shore, the statement said.

Australian Broadcasting Corp. quoted police in Kimbe, where the ferry sailed from, as saying most of the passengers were students and trainee teachers.

The authority's dedicated search and rescue airplane based in the northern Australian city of Cairns had reached the scene by afternoon and another two Australian airplanes were on the way. All three carried life rafts that could be dropped to survivors in the water.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard called the incident a "major tragedy."

"Given the likely very high loss of life here, I think when this news comes to the attention of Australians around the country they will be thinking about the people of PNG as they respond to this tragedy," she added.

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O'Neill said the cause of the sinking was unknown.

He said more than 300 people were aboard the ship, although the precise number had yet to be confirmed.

The Australian maritime agency initially detected the ferry's distress beacon and alerted the PNG Maritime Rescue Coordination Center, which is coordinating the rescue effort. The Australian statement said 219 survivors had been recovered by five ships by late Thursday.

It said 350 people were believed to be on board, but Papua New Guinea's National Maritime Safety Authority (NMSA) rescue co-ordinator Captain Nurur Rahman said the true figure was likely lower.

"I cannot confirm or deny the 350 missing number. It is hearsay," Rahman said. "I have not seen the manifest as yet, but it is likely around 300."

Rahman said he was being fed information from an NMSA agent on board one of the ships.

"The dynamics of this thing are changing all the time, minute by minute," he said.

Ship operator Star Ships could not be immediately contacted for comment.

Alabama immigration crackdown costs state up to $11 bln: study (Reuters)

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Reuters) ? Alabama's crackdown on illegal immigrants, widely seen as the toughest in the United States, has cost the state's economy up to $10.8 billion, according to a new study.

The Alabama law, passed in June, requires police to detain people they suspect of being in the U.S. illegally if they cannot produce proper documentation when stopped for any reason, among other measures.

The cost-benefit analysis by University of Alabama economist Samuel Addy estimated up to 80,000 jobs were vacated by illegal immigrants fleeing the crackdown, costing Alabama's economy up to $10.8 billion.

The lost jobs also cost Alabama up to $264.5 million in lost state sales and income taxes, and as much as $93.1 million in lost city and county sales taxes, it found.

A U.S. appeals court has blocked Alabama from enforcing parts of the law, including a provision that permits Alabama to require public schools to determine the legal residency of children upon enrollment. But the court left most of the law untouched.

State Republicans who support the law say it will help create jobs for legal residents by driving out undocumented workers and their families, and save up to $280 million they said is spent by the state each year on health and education services for the undocumented.

The findings of the new University of Alabama study served up ammunition to critics of the law in the state, which is trying to trim spending to balance its budget.

"It is hypocritical for 'no tax and spend' Republicans to pass something like this that sucks money right out of the general fund when we are cutting funding by 25 percent," said state Representative Patricia Todd, a Birmingham Democrat.

Todd claims that $9 million has already been spent on litigation to defend the new law, a figure she said she received from the legislative fiscal office.

The study added in the costs of healthcare and social services to undocumented people that would be saved. However, it found these savings to be negligible when compared to the increased costs of law enforcement and businesses that now have to run checks on citizenship.

Alabama Legislature convenes February 7 and even staunch defenders of the bill admit it needs revision. However, the repeal sought by opponents seems unlikely, according to Representative Paul DeMarco, a Republican.

"I do not see and would not support a complete repeal of the law, but will look at recommendations being made by the Attorney General and others," said DeMarco.

There are an estimated 11.2 million illegal immigrants in the United States.

Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah have passed "omnibus" immigration crackdowns since Arizona blazed the trail in 2010 with a law requiring police to check the status of all those they arrested and suspected of being in the country illegally. That measure has since been blocked by a court.

Controversy over the crackdown flared late last year, after two employees with foreign automakers Mercedes-Benz and Honda were stopped by police implementing the law.

LONDON (AP) ? Memo to Brazil: That idea of putting up a giant Jesus statue in a London park to promote the 2016 Olympic Games is not going over well.

Brazil's tourist board has floated the notion of erecting a 30-foot (9-meter) replica of Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue ? a symbol of peace and a well-known landmark of the city ? on Primrose Hill.

Malcolm Kafetz, the chair of the Friends of Primrose Hill, said the objections had nothing to do with religion.

"We oppose it on the grounds that we don't want any advertising in the royal parks," he said. "Otherwise we'll have Coca-Cola there soon enough."

Some residents weren't receptive to the idea.

"The neighborhood is not going to accept that," said America Martinez, a grandmother out walking her dog on a chilly London afternoon.

The Camden New Journal newspaper first reported that local authorities had been approached to consider the idea of putting up the statue on Primrose Hill ? a posh neighborhood that is home to film stars like Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow ? timing it to the 2012 Olympics Games in London. Though no formal proposal has been offered, many residents said they found the notion absurd.

Cinematographer Per Tingleff laughed at the thought of how the local resident association would react ? never mind trying to persuade park governors.

"Good luck with that," he said, noting that he's had personal experience of the bureaucracy involved with asking the Royal Parks for permission to use the city's green spaces.

The tourism board seemed stunned by the negativity. After all, the statue idea was just that ? an idea. They pointed to a statement from last week in which they underlined that Christ the Redeemer was only one of several ideas on the drawing board.

"We are surprised to see this story in the news as this is only a concept that was being considered as part of a wider platform of promotional activities for Embratur (the Brazilian Tourism Board) and the Brazilian government for 2012, when the focus moves from London to Rio," the board said in a statement.

They declined to respond further ? or to say whether they were planning to press on with the idea and present it formally to local officials.

As news of the idea filtered through Primrose Hill, eyebrows were raised. The idea seemed to mix with a general malaise about the Olympics themselves, which are considered by some to be too costly for Britain in a time of economic downturn.

Tim Boyd, 53, was among many who just thought it all too much.

"I don't agree with the Olympics anyway," he said.
