These days, video games aren't just for children. In fact, more and more these days, video games are for people who are having?children.

I should know, I'm one of those people. I'm a gamer. I'm a parent. And the?people who know this about me were kind enough to?introduce me to the wonderful world of adorable gamer-themed baby gifts when I gave birth to?my son Ico (yes, named after the video game).

The authors of such articles conveniently forget to factor in the cost of a homeowner?s time to manage and do the work, as well as the consequent loss of time spent with family, in leisure activities, or even at work, as they promote a do-it-yourself project.

Certainly, there are some home improvement or maintenance projects that are appropriate for a homeowner with some level of skill and knowledge. Examples of such projects include replacing a light fixture or door knob, repainting a bedroom, or even swapping out a toilet or faucet.

But when it comes to significant residential remodeling work, whether redoing a kitchen or adding a room or deck, very few homeowners have the requisite skills and time. Furthermore, the average amateur has no clout with specialty trade contractors and materials suppliers and cannot negotiate the best pricing and scheduling.

This is not to say that homeowners have no role in the remodeling process. For instance, it is up to the homeowner to establish a budget for the project based on what they can afford to spend, to evaluate and select the best contractor for the job, to educate themselves about the type of project they want, to ask questions and demand satisfactory answers and to make sure expectations for quality, cost, and time are communicated and met.

This ?Decide-it-Yourself? approach is a much more effective and appropriate use of a homeowner?s time and skills than the ?do-it-yourself? method. Even if the amateur manages the initial design and working drawings, he is likely to come to grief in building codes and permitting issues, even before starting work with subcontractors. Rather than trying to manage every detail of a remodeling project, homeowners entrust a professional remodeler to shepherd the project on their behalf and to their expectations.

In addition to their management skills, professional remodeling contractors offer other benefits. They provide a wealth of experience with similar projects and the craftsmanship to perform a given task or the ability to supervise the performance of a specialist?s work. Remodelers understand how all of the pieces go together. These are skills the professional has honed over several years of training and experience, just as anyone who works in any job or career learns the specific tools of his or her trade.

So, should you do it yourself? The answer comes down to this: do you truly have the skills and time to commit to the entire process of making your project a reality? Every professional remodeler can tell stories of desperate homeowners who needed to be bailed out of a do-it-yourself project that had gone terribly wrong. For all but the most skilled, hiring a professional may be the best way to stay within a budget for time and money, and the best way to achieve a happy outcome.

TARP bailout was worse than you think, former inspector says

Most Americans have a sense TARP was a badly managed program that bailed out "fat cat" bankers at the expense of U.S. taxpayers. Well, it's even worse than you think, according to Neil Barofsky, former special inspector general for TARP (SIGTARP).

Officials in both the Bush and Obama administrations took the attitude "bankers know best," Barofsky recalls. "It was somewhat shocking how much control big banks had over their own bailout [and] the overwhelming deference show by Treasury officials to the banks."

Much has been made about Barofsky's criticism of Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, who told CBS News he is "deeply offended" by how he's portrayed in Barofsky's book Bailout: An Inside Account of How Washington Abandoned Main Street While Rescuing Wall Street.

Barofsky pulled no punches in our earlier segment about the ongoing rate-rigging scandal. (See: "I Hope We See People In Handcuffs": Neil Barofsky Weighs in on LIBOR Scandal)

In the accompanying video, we focused more on TARP's failings to live up to its promise to help individual Americans, not just the big banks.

Congress never would've passed TARP if not for programs included in the program to help homeowners facing foreclosure and generally spur bank lending. "TARP was an abysmal failure on those very important goals the reason why they got that money to give to the banks in the first place," Barofsky says.

TARP "did help prevent financial Armageddon," he concedes. "But there's a reason why Congress required and Treasury promised TARP would do a lot more. It's not complicated to take hundreds of billions [of dollars] and pour them into institutions ... and they don't fail. You really can't evaluate TARP" exclusively on how it impacted the banks.

Similarly, Barofsky takes offense to Treasury's repeated proclamations that TARP has been profitable.

While the big banks have paid back their loans, the overall program is now projected to lose somewhere between $32 billion to $70 billion, with $109.1 billion owed as of June 30, according to SIGTARP. Most of those losses are tied to AIG -- Treasury still own 61% of the company -- but more than half of the 325 banks that received TARP aid have missed dividend or interest payments.

"The bottom line is [the government] still expects tens of millions of losses on TARP," Barofsky says. "The losses are a lot less than originally anticipated but this resorting to trickery really shows you they're trying to cover up how badly TARP has failed in its other goals of helping homeowners and increasing lending to the economy."

When Nic and Kirsten started house hunting last spring, they never dreamed they could afford a brand new home in one of Denver's most progressive, family-friendly neighborhoods. The Binghams desired a safe, kid-friendly neighborhood for their growing family, but were skeptical about finding exactly what they were looking for in Denver on their very limited budget. But after a bit of research, they discovered they were eligible for the Stapleton Affordable Housing Program and started the process of buying their very first home.

Before signing on the dotted line, the Binghams had to consider a few reasonable requirements that came along with purchasing an income restricted home: the approximate percentage appreciation restriction per year, and the fact that, when they are ready to move, the home must again be sold as an Income Qualified property.

Nic and Kirsten have added fabulous touches to the home (including 2 month old Ari!) since moving in just 11 months ago. A few of my favorite decor elements are the DIY sunburst mirror in the living room and Daphne's "work station" in her and Ari's shared bedroom. The kitchen and bathrooms are slated for paint and artwork in the near future (or just as soon as Kirsten and Nic can get a full night's sleep), but for now the family is busy spending time together at the neighborhood pool and enjoying the summer.

Biggest Challenge: MONEY! We are two young graphic designers (plus we have two kids) so I feel like we are far from having our "dream furniture", but we've done a lot with a very limited budget. I don't think we have spent more than $1000 on furniture/decor since moving into our house. Nic and I have never wanted a big house, but eventually we would love to have a small, light filled ranch with beautifully designed furniture.

What Friends Say: We were born in the wrong decade.

Biggest Embarrassment: : The kitchen cabinets, bathrooms (we want to completely re-do them ? that is why they are not pictured), our messy band room (converted from a 1-car garage ? also not pictured), and our brown "leather" couch which is totally falling apart.

Proudest DIY: My desk. We bought it off of Craigslist for $40 and it was covered in 4 layers of nasty paint. We spent a few days in the garage with my dad stripping, sanding and staining it. I love it so much now

SEATTLE (AP) - Salvaging a 2-5 road trip somehow felt extremely rewarding for Joe Girardi.

It's not the standard the New York Yankees manager wants to play to. But considering how the rest of their West Coast swing had gone, putting together a late rally on Wednesday was important, especially with the hated Red Sox waiting Friday night at home.

"After losing five games by a total of six runs, to be able to win a series going into an off day was important," Girardi said. "Two-and-five is not what we want on a road trip, but we won the second series and it'll be a happier flight home."

Pinch-hitter Jayson Nix lined a three-run double off reliever Shawn Kelley in the eighth inning, and the Yankees rallied for the 5-2 win over the Seattle Mariners.

After the Yankees failed to come through with runners in scoring position earlier in the game, Nix finally produced a clutch hit. Kelley left a 2-2 pitch over the middle of the plate and Nix's liner scored Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira. It was Nix's first hit in eight at-bats during the Yankees' trip.

"We kind of struggled all day to get something going and it feels good to come through," Nix said. "Whenever I get my chances, whenever they are, I just hope to do something positive and to be able to come through today was good."

Nix probably will see increased playing time with Alex Rodriguez sidelined for a month or more because of a fractured left hand. Nix and Eric Chavez, who started at third base on Wednesday, are the likely candidates to handle the position until Rodriguez returns.

Nix was called on to pinch-hit for Raul Ibanez, who was 0-for-3 on the day. Seattle countered with Kelley out of the bullpen after reliever Josh Kinney opened the inning by hitting Jeter on the thigh, and Lucas Luetge (1-1) loaded the bases with singles to Cano and Teixeira.

Luetge got Curtis Granderson to foul out behind third for the first out. Once Nix was announced as the pinch-hitter, Seattle manager Eric Wedge called on Kelley, who has now allowed runs in three of his last four appearances. Russell Martin added a two-out RBI single off Kelley, who finally escaped the inning by getting Ichiro Suzuki to ground out.

Nix is 2-for-3 this season as a pinch-hitter.

"Really all I wanted to do was hit a sac fly. I didn't want to do too much. I just wanted to get one run," Nix said. "I think that helped because I wasn't trying to do too much."

David Phelps (2-3) threw 1 1-3 innings of relief and struck out two to get the victory, but the entire Yankees pitching staff held Seattle's meager offense in check. Starter Ivan Nova struggled with his control, walking a career-high six, and gave up just two hits. Clay Rapada and Phelps bridged the sixth and seventh innings, David Robertson cruised through the eighth and Rafael Soriano pitched the ninth for his 26th save in 28 chances.

Seattle got just one hit after Jesus Montero's broken-bat single with one out in the first inning - Casper Wells dumped a two-out single off Soriano in the ninth. Both Seattle runs scored in the first on Kyle Seager's 10-pitch bases loaded walk and Mike Carp's fielder's choice.

"You're asking a lot of your pitching staff to hold those guys down for that many innings," Wedge said. "We almost squeezed by ... but ultimately you can't play it that tight against a veteran offensive club like that."

Jeter homered in the first inning, his eighth of the season, off Hisashi Iwakuma. But the Yankees missed chances in the fourth and fifth innings before Nix's clutch hit in the eighth.

Seattle honored Suzuki before his first at-bat. With Suzuki back in the leadoff spot on Wednesday, the Mariners played a video montage of Suzuki highlights before flashing up the message "Ichiro: Thanks for all the thrills." Suzuki acknowledged the standing ovation by tipping his helmet around the stadium before grounding out to second leading off the game.

Wednesday could be Suzuki's final appearance in Seattle. His contract expires after the season and the Yankees do not make another trip to the Pacific Northwest this season.

"I didn't really show it but inside I was going through some emotional times, but it was very special these last few days. Definitely emotional inside," Suzuki said through his interpreter.

If Colonoscopy Picks Up Cancer Risk, Get Next Screen in 5 Years: Study

WEDNESDAY, July 25 (HealthDay News) -- People who have had a colonoscopy during which a high-risk potentially cancerous polyp was removed may not need another colonoscopy for five years, German researchers report.

If this suggestion were to be adopted, it would be a change from the current recommendation in the United States, which calls for another colonoscopy three years after a high-risk polyp -- one that is likely to become cancerous -- is removed.

"This is a case control study, so they didn't follow a group of individuals over time to assess the impact of polyp removal," said Dr. Durado Brooks, director of prostate and colorectal cancers at the American Cancer Society.

That kind of patient follow-up, however, did take place in the study that established the current U.S. recommendations for colonoscopy, he noted.

In addition, while the German study looks at the odds of cancer developing over time, the older study that set the U.S. guidelines looked at the odds of a new polyp developing, Brooks said.

"The time frames they are recommending are something that might be considered, but you cannot make changes in current guidelines based on this study," he said.

The report was published online July 23 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

For the new study, a team lead by Dr. Hermann Brenner, at the German Cancer Research Center, in Heidelberg, looked at medical records of more than 2,500 people who had a cancerous polyp removed and compared them to nearly 1,800 people without such polyps.

They compared surveillance intervals of less than three years, three to five years, and six to 10 years before receiving another colonoscopy.

Looking at the risk of finding colorectal cancer, even for those with high-risk polyps, "strong, statistically significant risk reduction by 60 percent was seen for the less-than-three-years time window and by 50 percent for the three-to-five-years time window," the researchers wrote.

This was true for men, women, young and old, they added.

Their results suggest that surveillance colonoscopy could take place five to 10 years after the a low-risk polyp was found and removed, and possibly also be prolonged to five years for high-risk polyps, the researchers concluded.

The current recommendation for people with high-risk polyps is to have another colonoscopy three years after the polyp was removed, Brooks said.

If new polyps aren't found, then another colonoscopy isn't needed for 10 years, he said.

The 10-year span between colonoscopies is the recommendation for anyone who has a normal colonoscopy, Brooks added.

The advantage of extending the time between colonoscopies from three to five years in patients with high-risk polyps is the use of resources, he said.

The problem is that doctors don't follow the current guidelines.

"If we could get clinicians just to follow the current recommendations we could expand our resources considerably," Brooks said. "Right now far too many people are getting colonoscopies done at intervals that are not recommended by anyone's guidelines."

Some people who have had high-risk polyps get a colonoscopy every year. Many people who have normal colonoscopies get another after five years, Brooks said.

All the evidence shows that colonoscopies every five years is much too frequent, he said.

"We are doing far too many colonoscopies on people who are in the system, but there are at least 40 percent of adults at risk who have never been screened," Brooks said. "If you're 50 and older and never been screened -- get screened."

LA district attorney reviewing Bryson incident

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Prosecutors on Monday said they are reviewing evidence to determine whether charges should be filed against former Commerce Secretary John Bryson who was involved in a trio of traffic accidents last month.

Evidence was presented by San Gabriel police to county prosecutors Monday, said Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office. She declined to comment further about the case.

Bryson resigned June 21 after suffering a seizure, saying he didn't want his health to be a distraction from his job. Authorities said Bryson struck a car stopped for a train twice and then rammed into another vehicle with his car a few minutes later. He was found unconscious in his vehicle.

Bryson was cited for felony hit-and run. It wasn't known if he had retained an attorney.

A Breathalyzer test administered to Bryson shortly after the crashes didn't detect any alcohol.

Police received the results from a blood test given to Bryson, but didn't reveal what it contained. Authorities previously said if the test came back clean, it was unlikely charges would be filed against Bryson.

Bryson had been in California to deliver the commencement address at Pasadena Polytechnic School where his four children attended.

The incident occurred June 9 when Bryson drove alone in a Lexus near Los Angeles, authorities said. He struck a vehicle that had stopped for a passing train and spoke briefly with the three occupants then hit their car again as he departed, police said.

The secretary then struck a second car in a nearby city, where he was later found unconscious in his car.

Bryson is the former head of Edison International, the holding company that owns Southern California Edison, and has served on boards of major corporations, including the Boeing Co. and the Walt Disney Co.

They're waiting to nab an autograph from Rebecca Black, the girl who achieved infamy with her nasally music video "Friday." Over in the lobby, folks are sticking out their smartphones to capture a photo of Yogi the Welsh corgi, a dog who accidentally set a kitchen on fire, while others have surrounded a seated Paul "Bear" Vasquez, the man who unabashedly gushed over the sight of a double rainbow.

It's the third annual VidCon, a gathering of online video creators, viral video stars and the people who click "like" on them. The circus atmosphere is the ultimate physical manifestation of activities usually reserved for the privacy of one's lap or hand.

The event outgrew its previous digs at a Los Angeles hotel and has moved south to a convention center in the land of Disney's Magic Kingdom, but the astronomical audiences these online celebrities are attracting and the real money they're making are far from fantasy.

The event's organizers, John and Hank Green, known online as the Vlogbrothers, launched VidCon three years ago to unite video bloggers in space and time. This year's VidCon, which kicked off Thursday and continues through Sunday, is sponsored by the likes of Disney Interactive Media Group, the online video studios Maker and Revision3, and, of course, Google Inc.-owned YouTube.

"It's a great opportunity to meet people who have the same passion as you, even if they make videos that are completely different than yours," says 19-year-old Justin Stuart of Colorado Springs, Co. Stuart's simplistically silly video of himself and friends falling down in public places has amassed more than 1.7 million views on his "JStuStudios" channel on YouTube.

VidCon organizers say attendance at this year's sold-out event at the Anaheim Convention Center is more than double last year's turnout, attracting 6,000 mostly teenaged attendees, many of whom were accompanied by their parents, compared to last year's 3,600 con-goers.

The expanded offerings at this weekend's VidCon include more panels, an open-mic room for budding musicians and an expo floor with exhibitors showing off the latest in gadgets and software as attendees excitedly swap Twitter names, Facebook pages and YouTube channels.

On Friday morning, thousands of so-called YouTubers filled the convention center's arena to watch online video celebs like Nick Pitera, Rootberry and Henry Reich sing mash-ups, swallow swords and animate physics lessons before breaking off to attend panels with titles like "Don't Forget About Audio," "YouTube and the 2012 Election," and "So You Want to be a Vlogger? Now What?"

While the mood at VidCon is mostly jovial, the more serious minded in attendance recognize a change is afoot for their beloved realm. The lines are blurring between what's considered online video, and the entertainment industry is angling for more influence over the medium than ever before.

"We're seeing a trend of Hollywood coming in," said Benny Fine, who with his brother produces a series called "Kids React" that features children dishing on current events. "It's time to get ready to show that we have the audience and the abilities they do because, even if we have hundreds of millions of views, we're still going to be looked at differently."

Fine says there are three basic ways YouTubers can make money nowadays: through traditional advertising like pop-up ads and commercials, merchandising content with stuff like apparel and music, and forging sponsorships similar to the bacon-themed deals that the meat-loving cooking show "Epic Meal Time" has struck with several companies.

Shishir Mehrotra, YouTube's vice president of product management, announced Thursday at VidCon that the company is rolling out a new platform to directly connect its "partners," a group of uploaders with whom YouTube shares advertising revenue, with marketers looking to glom onto their online audience. The company says it pays millions to its "partners" each year, and thousands of YouTube channels generate six figures a year.

With all that money to be made, many VidCon attendees just want to know how they can procure a piece of it when the marketplace is becoming more crowded than the line to meet the girl who sang "Friday." Ze Frank, an artist regarded as the grandfather of vlogging, told the crowd that the answer lies within.

"Think about designing for one ? just you," said Frank. "Ultimately, if you do become successful and have lots of followers and fame, you'll still be left with the challenge, 'How do I make things that I want to make?'"

It can handle Cisco VPN connections that rely on pre-shared keys or certificates (IPSec) or with AnyConnect (SSL VPN).

The client supports a variety of operating systems, including Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, several Linux distributions, and OpenBSD. For organizations with a heterogeneous network, Shrew Soft's software allows them to standardize on one VPN client, regardless of the operating systems running.?

The fact that Macs aren't supported is disappointing. Considering the increasing numbers of Macs in the workplace, having a single client for all platforms would make the software a much stronger competitor.

Some advanced features are supported, including Split Tunneling, Split DNS, Nat Traversal, IKE Fragmentation, Packet Pre Fragmentation, Dead Peer Detection, Hybrid XAuth and automatic client configuration.

The Shrew Soft Website offers a thorough wiki with detailed setup instructions and screenshots on how to configure products from specific vendors. There are how-tos for open source gateways including OpenSWAN, StrongSWAN, m0n0wal, and pfSense.

One thing I like about Shrew Soft is the fact that it supports multiple VPN servers. In a scenario where a user needs to connect to multiple networks, and if they don't have the same type of server, that user would normally have to install client software for each connection. That can easily get messy and difficult, if the tools wind up conflicting with each other. With Shrew Soft, everything is configured easily under one tool, making it easy to switch back and forth.

Installation and Setup
Getting started is a breeze, as the user downloads the desired version for the operating system directly from the website. No registration required. After downloading and installing the software, users can launch Shrew Soft VPN Access Manager.

If the IT department has a Cisco .pcf VPN configuration file already available, the process is even easier. All the user has to do is save the .pcf file somewhere on the local computer, and then go to the VPN Access Manager's File menu to import the file. Once the file has been imported, an icon with the file name will appear on the screen. Click on it once and hit connect to establish a VPN tunnel.

If the .pcf file has an encrypted password, some versions of Shrew Soft VPN may not be able to access that information. You will then need to obtain the required information from the IT department and replace the encrypted password.
