Having it all? Women struggling with work-life balance are fortunate

Having it all ? excelling in a meaningful career while having plenty of time for family ? is a struggle for educated, privileged women, and the focus of a recent article in The Atlantic. But maybe the challenge of 'having it all' should be placed on society, not individual women.

By Stephanie Hanes,?Correspondent / June 29, 2012

Having it all is impossible, says former State Department official Anne-Marie Slaughter in an article for The Atlantic. She describes her struggles balancing a high-powered career with raising her two sons.

Anne-Marie Slaughter?s article in the July/August issue of The Atlantic, entitled ?Why Women Still Can?t Have it All,? has become the most popular piece the magazine has ever published.?

And no wonder.

Slaughter, a Princeton professor, former dean of the school?s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, former director of policy planning for the US State Department, (and many other things, all of which is part of the point of her article), has tapped into one of life?s most controversial and tormenting questions for young women of The Atlantic?s reading demographic.

How the heck do you ?have it all??

Or, how do you ?balance? a fully satisfying work life, with professional advancement and workplace accolades, with an equally full family life, with time for children and spouse and maybe even sometimes yourself?

The answer, Slaughter suggests, is, well, you can?t.? At least not with the way the US workplace is structured.

And not only that, she says, but the idea that anyone possibly can have ?it all? has been harmful for a generation of younger women who are increasingly seeing through the myth of feminist completion and have decided to give up either on families or on the high powered professional careers that they might otherwise enjoy.

I read Slaughter?s article with interest.

I am her target audience: relatively privileged, Ivy League educated, 30-something, trying regularly to figure out how to make ?it all? work. I skate between diapers and deadlines; I regularly feel guilty either about not writing enough or not putting my baby to bed, despite the cries of ?mama? coming from her room. I worry about taking time after dinner to work rather than spending those precious toddler-free moments with my husband, who has a heavy work-family load of his own.

You might say, actually, that I have no real problems.

And to that I would agree.

Google Drive 10 million users served

Day two of Google I/O 2012 has started, and Big G just gave us an update on the success of its cloud storage solution. Google Drive's been accessed by over 10 million people, which comes out to about 1 million a week since its launch. Not a massive number, but it's a pretty good start, and with the explosive growth of Android and the addition of Chrome OS and iDevice users to the Drive party, the cloud locker's legion of users will continue to grow.

Check out our full coverage of Google I/O 2012's developer conference at our event hub!

Foods For Vision: 6 Top Picks For Your Eyes

We've got a pretty serious problem here in the U.S. when it comes to our eyes.

Estimates suggest that 21 million Americans have some sort of functional vision problem or eye condition, and vision loss is among the top 10 disabilities in adults in the U.S.

While some problems are more serious and not preventable, there are things that can be done to promote good, general eye health, and eating well is one of them. Studies have suggested that getting a high dose of nutrients like lutein, Omega 3 fatty acids and lycopene can help lower your risk of developing macular degeneration by up to 25 percent. And experts say the potential benefits don't stop there.

"Eating well affects the entire body," said Judy Caplan, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. "The same foods that have a preventive effect on the eyes will also positively affect other body systems. Everything works synergistically."

Here are six of the best foods for promoting eye health. Any favorites we forgot? Let us know!

  • Kale, Spinach And Collards

Lutein and zeaxanthin are antioxidants that protect and maintain healthy cells -- and they're abundant in these dark, leafy greens, Caplan explains. She quotes <a href="http://www.aoa.org/" target="_hplink">The American Optometric Association,</a> which has reportedly said they act like "internal sunglasses" that can "filter harmful blue waves." Another bonus? "These [greens] are also high in vitamin A, which is good for the eyes," Caplan said.

  • Oysters

Zinc deficiency has been linked to impaired vision and poor night vision, as well as cloudy cataracts, Caplan says. But getting plenty of of the nutrient can work wonders, slowing the progression of age-related macular degeneration, which is <a href="http://www.nei.nih.gov/health/maculardegen/armd_facts.asp#1" target="_hplink">a common condition in adults age 50</a> and older. Oysters are a great source of zinc, Caplan explains. And if they're not exactly your thing, she suggests trying lobster, salmon, beef or milk instead.

  • Apricots

Apricots are a good source of beta carotene and lycopene, both carotenoids that can help promote good vision, explains Elisa Zied, an author and registered dietitian. Indeed, the <a href="http://www.maculardegenerationassociation.org/resources/information.aspx?post=98fede9b-f533-4530-9c69-a7d159063010" target="_hplink">Macular Degeneration Association explains</a> that the body converts beta carotene into vitamin A, which resists damage to cells and tissues, including the eye lens. "Continued oxidative stress may result in the development of cataracts or damage the blood supply to the eyes and lead to macular degeneration," the <a href="http://www.maculardegenerationassociation.org/resources/information.aspx?post=98fede9b-f533-4530-9c69-a7d159063010" target="_hplink">organization says.</a>

  • Sweet Potatoes

"It's prudent for people to follow current Dietary Guidelines for Americans, consuming at least three-and-a-half or four cups of produce each day," Zied says. And she recommends that people pay particular attention to eating plenty of fruits and veggies that are rich in vitamins C and A -- which is why sweet potatoes are high on her eye-health list. In fact, <a href="http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/vegetables-and-vegetable-products/2667/2" target="_hplink">a one-cup serving of sweet potato</a> has more than the full daily requirement for vitamin A. And yes, there is another orange, vitamin A-rich option that's more commonly associated with protecting our peepers: Zied also recommends good ol' carrots.

  • Eggs

Eggs are another food that's relatively high in zinc, Caplan explains. They're also a good source of Omega 3 fatty acids <em>and</em> lutein. As Tufts nutritional biochemist <a href="http://www.fitsugar.com/Eating-Eggs-Can-Benefit-Eye-Health-882515" target="_hplink">told FitSugar, </a>eggs don't contain as much of that particular carotenoid as the leafy greens that are also on this list, but "the body is able to absorb these antioxidants better from eggs," <a href="http://www.fitsugar.com/Eating-Eggs-Can-Benefit-Eye-Health-882515" target="_hplink">she says.</a>

  • Wheat Germ

"Vitamin E might slow macular degeneration [and can also] decrease risk of cataracts," Caplan says (<a href="http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-and-supplements/lifestyle-guide-11/supplement-guide-vitamin-e" target="_hplink">although WebMD cautions</a> that studies looking at possible benefits for cataracts have been inconclusive). She recommends wheat germ as her top source for vitamin E, as well as other tasty options like almonds, sunflower seeds, peanut butter and the aforementioned sweet potato.

"Time&#39;s Up!": Reaping What We Sow

by Charles Moncrief

There is a way that seems right, but its end is the way of death.?

Proverbs 14:12?

Rodney King was found dead in his southern California swimming pool on June 17, 2012. You can essentially ignore the medical examiner?s report. No official government report will tell you that the true cause of his death was a pattern of self-destructive behavior that set in motion his inevitable end.

Those in my generation remember Rodney King as an African-American man who was beaten by several Los Angeles police officers during a traffic stop in 1991. An amateur video shows the officers hitting Mr. King with their batons as other officers stood by and watched. The acquittal of the officers by a jury in 1992 provided an excuse for riots in South Central Los Angeles, in which more than 50 people were killed and more than 2,000 were injured. The US District Court effectively re-tried the officers, sending two of them to prison and strong-arming the city of Los Angeles to pay off Rodney King with a $3.5 million civil-rights settlement. Mr. King didn?t keep the settlement very long, and he was unsuccessful at obtaining more from his later arrests for continued drug use and other crimes. Among these arrests were for driving under the influence of PCP when he crashed into a power pole in 2005, and for suspicion of domestic violence. In 2007 police found Mr. King drunk and wounded from gunshot wounds believed to be associated with domestic violence. In all of the arrests the police conduct was reported as EXEMPLARY. No King was harmed in the making of future arrest movies.

The amateur video, which made for excellent propaganda in such places as Moscow and Bagdad, showed the power of editing by major news media. The video didn?t include the high-speed chase, including the number of pursuing units, nor did it show the lives that Mr. King endangered when he drove at freeway speeds through residential streets to evade capture. No propagandists aired Mr. King?s statement that he was fleeing police because he feared the impact a DWI arrest would have on his parole from a previous robbery conviction.

While it appears I'm beating up on Rodney King myself, I can?t argue. Hopefully, I'll mitigate the hammering in my conclusion. Either that, or I'll give additional causes of offense and dilute this a bit. First, however, I want to be perfectly clear about some things.

He DID NOT deserve the beating by officers.
He DID NOT deserve the physical destruction of his life by illegal drug use and other crimes.
He DID NOT deserve the gunshot wounds he sustained on at least one occasion.

While he upped the odds of these things happening, he did not deserve them.

For the mentoring effect he had on the younger generation, showing them examples of how they can clean up financially through a life of crime and civil-rights incidents, it seems that he could have made this speech:

?I've upped my odds. Now up yours.?

I've spent too much time on the Rodney King incident, so now I'm reducing to one-liners the things I wanted to address more fully. Here goes.

Several athletes from Duke University upped their odds of rape charges when they repeatedly hung out in exotic bars and formed relationships with the female employees. For three in 2006, the probability became a certainty.

A person escaping a relationship of domestic violence ups her odds of serious injury when she returns to the home in response to pleas from her husband and the family minister.

A man ups the odds of coronary artery disease when he lives a sedentary lifestyle and consumes inappropriate foods. (Sorry, I can?t get more specific than that. A juicy steak may hurt some, while broom straws and other fibers may hurt others. But you get the idea.)

Fair is fair. I can?t close without returning to make a final comment about Rodney King.

I was disgusted when I learned that he blew through the $3.5 million, disappointed that he didn?t use even a part of the money for drug rehabilitation. Mea culpa. Mr. King may not have used the settlement money to fund any rehabilitation, but he DID make the effort to rebuild his life. He did attend rehabilitation, and he did take to the lecture circuit making speeches about the destructive effects of drug abuse. Even after turning cynic and taking cynical points off Mr. King?s appearance on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew and Sober House, the good that Mr. King did in the last few years must not be allowed to die with him. Even in the dirtiest places, a flower can grow.

Grace and Peace,

Charles+

Fuel duty will be frozen for the rest of the year, the chancellor told MPs. Labour had threatened to force a House of Commons vote on the issue. Mr Osborne said the government was ?doing everything we can in very, very difficult economic circumstances? to help businesses and consumers. Source BBC.

Understanding what's up with the Higgs Boson at the Large Hadron Collider

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, will hold a seminar early in the morning on July 4 to announce the latest results from ATLAS and CMS, two major experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) that are searching for the Higgs boson. Both experimental teams are working down to the wire to finish analyzing their data, and to determine exactly what can be said about what they've found.

"We do not yet know what will be shown on July 4th," says Ian Hinchliffe, a theoretical physicist in the Physics Division at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), who heads the Lab's participation in the ATLAS experiment. "I have seen many conjectures on the blogs about what will be shown: these are idle speculation. Things are moving very fast this week, and it's an exciting time at CERN. Many years of hard work are coming to fruition."

Last December, not long after the LHC had shut down for the winter, ATLAS and CMS both reported slight excesses over background of two kinds of signals consistent with the expected signature of a Higgs boson. The LHC started running again at a higher energy this spring, and, says Hinchliffe, "In that short time we've already doubled the data. But even if both experiments were to confirm what they saw last year with new data, no one can be certain that it is the Higgs."

Why can't they know? And what's a Higgs boson anyway?

Why particles have mass

A Higgs boson is an excitation -- a fleeting, grainy representation -- of the Higgs field, which extends throughout space and gives all other particles their mass.

At the instant of the big bang, everything was the same as everything else, a state of symmetry that lasted no time and was immediately broken. Particles of matter called fermions emerged from the sea of energy (mass and energy being interchangeable), including quarks and electrons that would much later form atoms. Along with them came force-carrying particles called bosons to rule how they all were related. All had different masses -- sometimes wildly different masses.

Using the concepts of a Higgs field and Higgs boson, the Standard Model explains why quarks, protons, electrons, photons, and a wide-ranging zoo of other particles have the specific masses they do. Oddly, however, the Standard Model can't predict the mass of the Higgs itself. That will only be learned from experiment.

It will be far from simple to know when the Higgs has actually been found. Any particle that packs as much energy as the Higgs lasts only a miniscule fraction of a second before it falls apart into other particles, each with lower energy, and these fall apart into still lower-energy particles, finally leaving a set that ATLAS or CMS can see or infer. According to the Standard Model, the Higgs can decay by half a dozen different patterns of tracks, or channels.

The probability of each path varies. For example, there's a low probability that a Higgs with mass equivalent to 100 billion electron volts (100 GeV) of energy would decay into a pair of W bosons, carriers of the weak interaction. Yet if its mass were 170 GeV, the probability of its decaying by that channel would be very high.

But earlier measurements, including those made last year at the LHC and at Fermilab's Tevatron, have already excluded many possible masses for a Standard Model Higgs. Of the narrowing possibilities, the hints that ATLAS and CMS saw in 2011 were in the neighborhood of 125 or 126 GeV.

The two channels involved, called the two-photon channel and the four-lepton channel for short, are certainly not the most likely decay routes, says Beate Heinemann of Berkeley Lab's Physics Division, who is also a professor in UC Berkeley's Department of Physics. "The probability that a 125-GeV Higgs would decay into two gamma rays is about two tenths of one percent, and the likelihood that it would decay into four muons or electrons is even smaller."

Finding the music in the noise

Background noise is the key. Even though the two-photon and four-lepton channels have a low probability, they are relatively free of noise from particle debris that obscures evidence of other channels. More probable routes for the decay of a Higgs with mass near 125 GeV would be to a bottom quark and antibottom quark, or a pair of W bosons, or a pair of tau particles, but all these are much harder to detect.

Heinemann, recently the Data Preparation Coordinator for ATLAS, says knowing what to look for is crucial. "Bunches of protons cross through each other 20 million times a second inside the ATLAS detector, with an average of 20 collisions at each crossing." Electronic filters automatically cull the events to 100,000 per second of possible interest. Sophisticated software further reduces the cull to a few hundred events per second that are recorded and stored for later study. Says Heinemann, "We try to keep everything anyone can think of that might be interesting."

The products of data reduction are colorful diagrams of spectacular sprays of particles from proton-proton collisions, recorded by the concentric layers of detectors that ATLAS wraps around the beam line. What makes the diagrams so intricate and precise begins in the Inner Detector, largely designed and built at Berkeley Lab, as was much of the filtering and sifting hardware and software.

"The LHC produces far more particles per collision than any accelerator before it. Not confusing them requires finer granularity and finer resolution, which means many more detector elements close to the beam," says Murdock "Gil" Gilchriese, who headed the Berkeley Lab group that worked on the ATLAS Inner Detector.

The very heart of ATLAS is a pixel detector consisting of 80 million tiny silicon rectangles 50 microns (millionths of a meter) wide and 400 microns long, each connected to its own electronics -- many millions of transistors bathed in the most intense radiation an accelerator has ever produced.

At CERN, U.S. participation in the ATLAS and CMS experiments alone numbers well over 1,500 people, not to mention significant U.S. contributions to other experiments and the accelerator itself. Fermilab hosts the U.S. participation in CMS, and Brookhaven National Laboratory is the U.S. host for ATLAS.

"About 20 percent of the ATLAS collaboration comes from the U.S.," says Heinemann, "and one of the largest contingents is from Berkeley Lab, many of us in key positions. For example, Kevin Einsweiler, who led the ATLAS pixel project, is currently ATLAS's Physics Coordinator, guiding analysis of the data. Michael Barnett has long held the post of Outreach Coordinator. At any given time we may also have 10 students and 10 postdocs working on ATLAS. There are a lot of us, and much of the time many of us are on the job at CERN."

Whatever news comes out of CERN in the wee hours of the morning on July 4, hints and indications so far are just the beginning of the search to pin down the Higgs and learn its characteristics. The Higgs search commences a long voyage of discovery into a realm of unexplored physics, of supersymmetry, dark matter, miniature black holes, extra dimensions of space -- and other, unanticipated wonders that defy prediction.

Reports: UBS may have $350M Facebook trade losses

NEW YORK (AP) ? Swiss bank UBS AG may have lost as much as $350 million due to technical glitches on the Nasdaq stock exchange the day Facebook went public, according to reports published Friday.

CNBC and The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that UBS is considering legal action against Nasdaq as a result.

UBS spokeswoman Karina Byrne confirmed that the bank lost money due to Nasdaq's technical issues when the social networking company's stock began trading on May 18.

Byrne declined to disclose the amount but said it was "not material" to the bank. She said UBS has not taken legal action but is weighing its options for recovering its losses.

"Given the size of our U.S. equities business and our role as a major market maker, UBS was affected by these issues, as we believe other market participants may have been," Byrne said in a statement.

Nasdaq declined comment on the reports Friday.

The $350 million figure dwarfs previous estimates for the combined losses resulting from technical glitches at Nasdaq during Facebook's first day of trading. This week, the exchange said it would hand out $40 million in cash and credit to reimburse investment firms.

Facebook Inc.'s initial public stock offering was one of the most widely anticipated market debuts in years. But it quickly turned chaotic.

The opening was delayed by half an hour. Then, technical problems kept many investors from buying shares in the morning, or selling them later in the day, or even knowing whether their orders went through. Some investors complained they were left holding shares they didn't want.

According to CNBC and the Journal, UBS placed an order for 1 million shares but did not receive confirmations and repeated the order several times. So it ended up with much more stock than it intended.

Facebook's stock originally priced at $38 and closed that first day at $38.23, disappointing those hoping for a first-day surge. Nasdaq has said it was embarrassed by the glitches but that they didn't contribute to the underwhelming returns.
