Synagogue for the Performing Arts Celebrates High Holy Days at ...

The Synagogue for the Performing Arts is the original Los Angeles area entertainment industry synagogue, founded in 1973 by members of the local show business community. The original membership?actors, screenwriters, and behind-the-scenes professionals in the diverse fields of the performing arts shared a desire to worship together unencumbered by the pressures and politics associated with most congregations.

Today, the Synagogue thrives with a diverse membership that extends beyond its show business roots. It remains ?a synagogue without walls,? still meeting only once a month for Friday night Sabbath services with overwhelming attendance, and its High Holy Days Services are generally filled to capacity with members and their guests.

The Synagogue?s spiritual leader, Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, who travels from New York for services, is not only a world-renowned scholar and author, but also a screenwriter with film and television credits, whose work has appeared on Touched by an Angel and the Emmy-winning drama series, The Practice. Cantor Judy Fox, who appears often in concerts and on the Jewish Television Network, is the congregation?s musical director.

This year?s High Holy Days services will be held at Sportsmen?s Lodge in Studio City on Rosh Hashanah Sept. 16, 17, and 18 and Yom Kippur on Sept. 25 and 26. There will also be a Shabbat service on Sept. 7 including a ?Q&A? with Rabbi Telushkin at the Gindi Auditorium at American Jewish University.

For information regarding High Holy Days tickets and Synagogue membership, call the Synagogue office at (310) 472-3500 or visit the website at sftpa.com.
